My unpopular opinion is getting sober does not make everyone’s life better. This year, after 7 years of not being sober (I started when I was 16, im 23 now), I quit drinking, smoking cigarettes/vaping, and smoking weed. I cant pinpoint a single thing about my life that’s better from cutting being sober sucks out these things. Im not unhappy by any means, but im not as happy as I was before.I cut these things out because I realized I was high/drunk/tipsy more often than not and that doesn’t seem like a good thing. But now that I’m sober I can’t really figure out why it was a bad thing.
- As with most problems, the solution is as difficult or as simple as we make it.

- Shortly after that Binzer was reportedly arrested for a DUI.
- It’s important to remember that you never have to give yourself up to make other people comfortable—ever.
The Downside of Sobriety: The 6 Things No One Tells You Might Happen If You Quit Drinking
When I finally walked away from booze at 34, my life opened up. I can honestly say sobriety is the best thing I have ever done for myself. It was my jumping-off point into a life I knew I had buried inside of me. I got out of debt, started a company that provides digital recovery, launched a podcast, and am in the middle of writing a book.
life isn’t better sober
In these moments, I have to remind myself that recovery isn’t just about not drinking; it’s about remembering that I am first and foremost responsible for advocating for my own well-being and boundaries. While you may not wish for this scenario to happen, for there to not be attention drawn to you, or for you to potentially be seen as the difficult, high-maintenance sober chick, this is one of the best things that can happen! This is an opportunity to assert for your needs, and therefore assert your worth. It’s part of the sobriety package, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Enjoy Sobriety
And in case it wasn’t already obvious, the only way to get to long-term sobriety is to first achieve short-term sobriety. There are people for which sobriety is a deal-breaker. This might seem like a terrible thing; this is not a terrible thing. This is a JOYOUS and wonderful thing because it easily sorts out the ones that have a weird relationship with alcohol, or the ones that just aren’t for you.
- This is a treatment that first prevents someone from using their substance of choice and then provides information about the harm of using.
- You’re probably not going to hear this anyplace else, so I should get some points for candor, even though it is certainly controversial to talk about the negative aspects of something so overwhelmingly positive.

- Not only because my portion of the check is significantly smaller than anyone else at the table, but also because I refuse to invest in Big Alcohol.
- Once again, males demonstrated no significant differences.

The Hard Parts of Being Sober
If you are concerned about alcohol’s effect on your life or a loved one’s life, please feel welcome. Enjoy the freedom in not being compelled to drink, etc. The pleasure in feeling in charge of your own actions, mind, and life.
Drunk On Emotions
I was inspired to revisit the topic after reading a recent post by Heather Lowe, called Sober is Boring and I Have Lost Friends. Another interesting finding that came from this research was that females with the inactive ALDH2 genotype were more likely to suffer from major depression, eating disorder, panic disorder, and borderline personality disorder. Once again, males demonstrated no significant differences. Investigators hypothesize that something about the ALDH2 genotype prevents the early onset of female alcoholism.
